6 Skills to Empower your Kids to Adjust to Pre-school

Getting ready for Pre-School... and all the feelings that come with it!
Here are 6 of our top skills to help your child navigate their first days back to school.

1. RE-ESTABLISH A CONSISTENT ROUTINE

Rehearse this with your child, e.g homework, playtime, brushing teeth + get back into a school sleep schedule.

Practice gentle winding down activities such as bath time & reading before bed to help your child relax.

2. ENCOURAGE INDEPENDANCE

Encourage involvement in back to school activities such as packing school supplies or choosing school outfits.

Involve them in age appropriate tasks such as helping with preparing lunch or cleaning up.

3. TALK ABOUT KINDNESS

Nurture kindness in their daily routine. practice kind words,  and smiles + getting used to  sharing & waiting turns.

Teach good manners, such as being respectful to others, greeting people properly, & speaking politely.

4. PRACTICE OPENING & CLOSING

Help your child navigate their belongings by practicing accessing their backpack, lunchbox, waterbottle etc.

Familiarize them about what’s in their school bag so they know to ask for it: wash cloth, sun hat, rain coat etc.

5. TALK ABOUT SAFETY

Review outdoor and indoor safety rules, such as washing hands, not touching sharp objects; avoid putting things in their mouths, looking both ways when walking etc.

6. TALK ABOUT FIRST WEEK JITTERS

Reassure your child that being nervous is natural.

Let them express their fears. discuss the scenarios that worry them.

Practice introductions and conversations.
